Throughout this essay I will explore some of these relationships, and demonstrate the different ways in which the characters function in them. What matters is the quality of their life and their attitude towards it, and both may challenge the duties of non-interference and service. More recently it has come to mean ‘the action of inducing a gentle and easy death’ and so refers mainly to those actions, usually performed by a doctor, in which a person’s life is deliberately shortened or terminated. These actions are also known as ‘mercy killings’ since the death involved must in some way end sufferings and therefore be in the person’s own interest.
